Formalising the informal, without erasing it.

Khula is a comprehensive business management platform built for the Khula Foundation NPC — empowering communities through organised, formalised business.

Our Mission

Bringing structure to the backbone of township retail

Spaza shops are the primary retail channel for millions of South Africans — but the sector runs largely informally, with only about one in eight shops registered with SARS. That informality limits access to finance, compliance support and growth.

Khula was built to close that gap: a single platform that carries a shop from an unregistered outlet to a monitored, compliant and growing business — from national oversight all the way down to the individual counter.

Why It Matters

Reform created urgency. Data creates opportunity.

The 2024 food-safety crisis and the national registration drive that followed made one thing clear: the informal economy needs tools, not just enforcement.

Compliance

Track registration, licensing and food-safety readiness against evolving national policy.

Visibility

Provincial analytics and a single registry give oversight bodies real numbers, not estimates.

Growth

Connect compliant shops to wholesale supply, support funds and the tools to scale.

How We Work

Register. Equip. Monitor. Scale.

The same four-step journey underpins every shop on the platform.

01
Register & Assign

Onboard

Register outlet locations with GPS coordinates and assign shop operators.

02
Configure & Equip

Equip

Set up lottery terminals, EFTPOS devices and stock catalogues.

03
Monitor & Manage

Monitor

Track implementation status, field operations and compliance in real time.

04
Analyse & Scale

Scale

Generate provincial reports, identify gaps and grow operations nationwide.

Our Team & Partners

On the ground, building the network

Khula is built and run by a South African team working directly with shop owners, coordinators and national partners — not from a distance.
